Why This Entry Exists
Few nutrition beliefs are as universal — or as manufactured — as "never skip breakfast." It gets repeated by doctors and parents as settled fact, and it drives real behaviour (guilt-eating a bowl of cereal you don't want). It is also one of the cleanest examples of a marketing slogan laundered into "common knowledge," which makes it a perfect teaching case for Realised's evidence posture: trace the claim, check the trials, and then resist the opposite overcorrection too.
The honest picture: the slogan came from cereal marketing; controlled trials find eating breakfast doesn't aid weight loss (skippers lose slightly more); but skipping carries a small cardiometabolic trade-off, the protein-breakfast advantage is about satiety and glucose rather than proven fat loss, and a real but modest subgroup signal says front-loading calories suits some people's body clocks. So: breakfast is optional and personal, and the decision that actually matters is composition, not the meal's mythologised status.
What bad advice this protects against, both ways:
• "You must eat breakfast or your metabolism suffers / you'll overeat later" → guilt-driven eating on a false premise.
• "Skipping breakfast is a health hack / fat-burning trick" → the opposite overcorrection (there's a small LDL trade-off; it doesn't "boost metabolism" either way).

Evidence
1. The slogan is documented marketing (Tier 1, historical). The phrase traces to the Kellogg orbit — dietitian Lenna Cooper wrote it in Good Health (1917), a magazine of J.H. Kellogg's Battle Creek Sanitarium — and was mass-amplified by General Foods' 1944 Grape Nuts radio campaign ("Nutrition experts say breakfast is the most important meal"). It was never grounded in a controlled trial.
2. Skipping breakfast does not cause weight gain (Tier 1). Meta-analyses of RCTs — Sievert et al. (BMJ 2019) and Bonnet et al. (Obesity 2020) — found adding breakfast did not aid weight loss; breakfast eaters had higher total daily intake, and skippers lost ~0.5 kg more over 4–16 weeks. The folk mechanisms ("kick-starts metabolism," "prevents later overeating") are not supported.
3. But don't flip to "skipping is better" (Tier 1). The same RCT meta-analysis found LDL cholesterol rose ~9 mg/dL in breakfast-skippers (Bonnet 2020). Skipping is a trade-off, not a free win.
4. Composition matters — protein/fat beats sugary cereal for satiety and glucose (Tier 1, short-term). Crossover RCTs consistently show high-protein breakfasts (eggs, dairy, meat) produce greater satiety and lower postprandial glucose/insulin than isocaloric cereal. But this is mostly acute/short-term: longer trials are inconsistent (the NewStart RCT found no body-composition difference between high- and low-protein breakfasts), so it's a satiety/glycaemic advantage, not a demonstrated fat-loss lever.
5. A real but modest chronotype/genotype signal (Tier 3, emerging). Chrononutrition work (big-breakfast diets; MTNR1B rs10830963 risk-allele carriers more glucose-sensitive to late eating) suggests front-loading calories earlier improves glycaemic control and weight in some people — so the "your body clock might modulate this" hedge is legitimate, not fringe.
6. The cognition claim is weak (Tier 3). "Breakfast helps focus" rests largely on observational/cross-sectional data with self-selection; acute RCTs show a transient same-morning benefit vs fasting, strongest in nutritionally compromised children — not a general adult productivity claim.
Mechanism
Why skipping doesn't "wreck metabolism." Total daily energy balance, not meal count, governs weight (see diet_energy_balance). Skipping breakfast simply shifts the eating window; metabolic rate isn't meaningfully "started" by a morning meal. The "you'll binge later" worry is real for some but, on average, skippers' lower morning intake isn't fully compensated — hence the slightly greater weight loss.
Why composition still matters. Protein drives satiety (hormonal — higher PYY/GLP-1, lower ghrelin) and has a high thermic effect; pairing protein/fat with breakfast blunts the glucose/insulin spike a refined-carb cereal produces. So the breakfast that's eaten changes hunger and glycaemia for the morning even if the whether doesn't change weight.

• Disordered eating: "skip breakfast" framing can feed restriction — not appropriate guidance there.
• Pregnancy and high-demand training may warrant earlier/regular fuelling.
• This entry corrects a myth; it is not a directive to skip meals.
