Why This Entry Exists
"Calm focus, no jitters" is the entire pitch for an industry of theanine capsules, "smart coffee" subscriptions, and focus-stack blends. The story is seductive: caffeine gives you the alertness, L-theanine "takes the edge off," and you get clean productivity without the shakes, the crash, or the anxiety. It is repeated so often it reads as settled fact.
The honest version is narrower and more interesting. There is a replicated acute cognitive synergy — small, but real and double-blind. There is a measurable softening of caffeine's blood-pressure spike. But the specific claim people buy the stack for, "it stops the jitters," is the one the original trial explicitly contradicts: theanine blunted the cardiovascular response to caffeine while leaving subjective jitteriness and state anxiety unchanged. Marketing fused two different outcomes into one promise.

The 2025 Nutrition Reviews (Oxford) meta-analysis (50 RCTs, 16 pooled) found the combo beat placebo on attention-switching accuracy (SMD 0.33, 95% CI 0.13–0.54) and digit-vigilance accuracy (SMD 0.20, 95% CI 0.02–0.38) at hour 2. Two independent lines of evidence, same direction. The catch is in the numbers: these are small standardised effects on narrow attention tasks, not a transformation of cognition.
2. L-theanine genuinely attenuates caffeine's blood-pressure rise (Tier 2). Haskell 2008 reported that L-theanine "tended to counteract the caffeine-induced rise in blood pressure." This is the strongest mechanistic leg of the "takes the edge off" idea — but note what edge: the cardiovascular one, measured on a cuff, not the subjective jittery feeling (see point 3).
3. The "eliminates jitters/anxiety" claim fails as stated (Tier 2, against the marketing). Same trial, the decisive finding: L-theanine "did not interact with caffeine-induced increases in either alertness or jitteriness" and did not move state-anxiety scores. It blunts the BP response, not the feeling. The marketing conflates a cardiovascular measure with a subjective one — they came apart in the data.
4. It is reliably safe in acute use (Tier 1 for safety). The L-theanine meta-analysis (5 RCTs, 148 adults, 50–500 mg) and the combination systematic review both report side-effect profiles matching placebo, with no adverse events. The combination also reduced self-reported "headache" and "tired" ratings versus caffeine alone — a real comfort signal, just not the same as "no jitters."
5. The ~1:2 caffeine:theanine ratio is a reasonable heuristic, not a magic number (Tier 2). Effective real-world combinations span roughly 40–160 mg caffeine with 80–250 mg theanine (e.g. 40 + 97, 150 + 250, 160 + 200 all showed effects). Pooled trial medians were closer to ~89 mg caffeine / ~82 mg theanine — nearer 1:1 than the popular 1:2. The ratio is a starting point, not a precision instrument.
6. Effects are acute and time-locked (Tier 2). Benefits appear around 40–70 minutes in, matching the pharmacokinetic peak, and are a discrete, dose-by-dose phenomenon. 7. L-theanine as a standalone nootropic is overhyped (Tier 3, downgraded). The monotherapy meta-analysis found the only significant solo benefit was visual processing speed at high doses (200–400 mg; RVIP reaction time −15.2 ms); simple reaction time and Stroop were null, and the authors rated certainty "low or very low." Mechanism
Caffeine — the major partner. Caffeine is an adenosine-receptor antagonist: it blocks the "you're tired" signal, raising alertness, and transiently nudges blood pressure and arousal up. Its evidence base is far deeper than theanine's; in this stack caffeine is doing most of the work.
L-theanine — the minor partner. Theanine is an amino acid (notably in tea) that crosses the blood-brain barrier and is associated with increased alpha-band EEG activity, a state linked to relaxed-but-alert attention. Why BP-down and jitters-unchanged can both be true. Subjective jitteriness and measured blood pressure are different read-outs of arousal and can dissociate. Theanine touched one (cardiovascular) and not the other (the feeling). Reading "BP attenuated" as "jitters gone" is the central error of the marketing.
Why the BP story is muddier than marketed. A separate stress-BP study (Yoto/Kimura, n=14, 200 mg theanine vs 100 mg caffeine tested separately, not stacked) found that in high responders, caffeine alone also lowered stress-induced systolic BP. So theanine is not simply "cancelling a caffeine harm" — both compounds independently dampened stress-BP in that design. The clean "theanine neutralises caffeine" narrative is an oversimplification.
Risks And Contraindications
• The risk is mostly caffeine's, not theanine's. Theanine in acute doses (50–500 mg) shows a placebo-matched side-effect profile and no adverse events in the trial sets.
