"Reset your dopamine" is one of the stickiest wellness hooks of the last few years. The pitch: your brain is fried from short-form video and notifications, your dopamine is "spiked" and depleted, and a 24-hour fast from all pleasure will reset your receptors back to baseline. It sounds neuroscientific, it has a protocol, and it spreads.
The awkward part is that the person who coined "dopamine fasting," psychiatrist Cameron Sepah, explicitly said the name was a catchy label for a cognitive-behavioural stimulus-control technique and was "not to be taken literally." Influencer and wellness-channel framing then literalised it into pseudo-neuroscience: a fuel-tank model of dopamine that the underlying biology does not support. So the trend now carries a real behavioural kernel inside a false mechanistic shell, and users can't tell which part to trust.

Mechanism
What dopamine actually is. A continuously-regulated neurotransmitter that signals incentive salience (wanting) and, in its phasic bursts, reward-prediction-error. It is not a quantity you accumulate and spend. There is no tank to empty, no toxin to clear, no level that a behaviour "uses up." This is why the fuel-tank framing fails at the root: the model is wrong about what dopamine is.

Why "resetting receptors in 24 hours" is false. Receptor-level adaptation does not run on a one-day clock, and no human study shows brief abstinence changing dopamine-receptor sensitivity.
