Foundational Mental Axiom

Stress Response Is Adaptive But Context Dependent

Statement

The stress response (HPA axis, sympathetic activation) evolved for acute threats --- chronic activation causes harm

Why it matters

Stress isn't inherently bad; the mismatch between
modern stressors and ancient response systems is the problem

Why Foundational

Foundational because the HPA-axis-and-sympathetic stress response system evolved for acute threats over millennia — fight or flight, then return to parasympathetic recovery. The system is highly adaptive when used as evolved (acute activation, complete recovery). Chronic activation causes documented harm (allostatic load, cardiovascular disease, immune dysfunction, inflammatory cascade). Stress isn't inherently bad — the mismatch between modern continuous low-grade stressors and ancient acute-recovery response systems is the problem. Important compatibility with stress_mindset_enhancing_vs_debilitating: acute stress framed as enhancing produces good outcomes; chronic uncontrollable stress is genuinely harmful regardless of framing.
