Attention is not one dial and the "brain fog" of overloaded modern life is not one thing — it decomposes into at least three separable systems (working-memory/executive control, sensory gating, and threat/salience-driven self-referential content), all of which are *anti-correlated* with the mind-wandering default-mode network and seesaw against it; the salience network is the switch that flips between them, attentional churn (rapid switching) rather than thought-volume is what depletes, and high-trigger-density environments (the screen) tax the system by driving that switching. ---
